Not a particularly early morning today, curtains and air con are fantastic inventions! Just been to the bank to change some money – between the four of us we changed $400 into just under 4 million Rials! Three big wads of cash, the notes we got were all equivalent to $1 and $2. The man in the bank was very friendly and seemed exceptionally happy to change the money for us.
Just been to buy bread and cashews and off towards the coast.
Haha, we were just stopped at a checkpoint where the guard gave our passports a confused look and asked us where we are from. He said he wants to come to Britain and asked for our address so he can come and stay with us when he gets here. We gave him James’ old flat address to keep him happy and he waved us on our way.
The landscape is really changing into desert now, there’s just dry mud everywhere and nothing green, so different to anything at home. It’s really sunny too, I think my tanline’s moved already, slightly shorter sleeves today.
It’s all changed again, some trees started appearing at the sides of the road then we went into a long tunnel and when we came out the other end, the road was heading down into a very green valley (what we could see through the thick fog anyway) There are stalls of honey everywhere too, this must be beekeepersville!
Following TYO is great fun, we just went round a roundabout about 3 times, almost got crushed undertaking lorries on the verge on the inside of a corner but it’s all great fun, and we’ve not even had a tiny bump yet.
We’ve made it to Astara and looking for a way down to the beach or just a good campsite with some firewood around.
We got to the beach! Managed to get the micra totally stuck on the way, but Thunderbirds to the rescue! They pulled us out and in the process we discovered that our foot pump doesn’t work! Some guys on motorbikes turned up and showed us the way onto the beach, there’s a little beach club here with little wooden shelters and stuff, seems really cool, we’re off to play a bit of Nerf-ball.
Got fed some excellent chicken kebabs, and offered some super-strength vodka (52% in a can!) – the guys here were drinking it in shots with the tiniest drop of coke in it. We all declined, we’re all pretty attached to our hands. We played some crazy Iranian card game too which seemed to involve cheating your arse off most of the time and making up rules so you can win!
Off to bed now, turns out that half the guys here are gay, one was coming on to both James and me, Hugh got offered money to go back to some old guy’s house earlier after he’d tried to get a kiss from Russ! Shovel is in the tent porch.
